Grandma’s Old Fashion Sugar Cookies.

Part of the Christmas cookie brigade.

Directions:

Stir together flour, baking powder, baking soda, salt and nutmeg. In a large bowl, beat shortening for 30 seconds, add sugar and beat until fluffy.Add eggs, vanilla and lemon extract - beat well. Add flour mixture and buttermilk, alternating to shortening mixture beating until well mixed. Divide in half. Cover and chill at least 3 hours or until easy to handle.

For large cookies, roll dough a half inch thick. Cut into rounds with 3 inch cookie cutter. For small cookies, roll dough 3/8 inch thick and cut into rounds with a 2 inch cutter. Place 2.5 inches apart on an ungreased cookie sheet. Sprinkle with additional sugar. Bake at 375F for 10-12 minutes or until done. Remove and cool.

Makes 24 large and 48 small.

  • 4.5 cups AP flour

  • 2 tsp. baking powder

  • 1 tsp. baking soda

  • 1/2 tsp. salt

  • 1/2 tsp ground nutmeg

  • 1 1/4 cup shortening

  • 2 cups sugar

  • 2 eggs

  • 1 tsp. vanilla

  • 1/2 tsp. lemon extract

  • 1 cup buttermilk (or sour milk) (Sour milk-combine 1 Tbsp lemon juice or vinegar and enough milk to make 1 cup. let stand 5 minutes)
